Why do you think news of poaching and illegal wildlife trade don't spark the same amount of attention and action as abused animal stories?

Why do you think we, as citizens of the planet we call home, should do all we can to save tigers?

Apr/May 2010

TX2 recently held a face-painting event at the FGS Temple on 20th February 2010. Were you there? Did you take part? What did you think of the event? Should we have more of such activities to promote our goal of doubling Malayan tigers?

May 2010

We live in a comfortable world, far removed from the harsh realities of the tiger's encroached home in the jungle. We don't eat tiger meat, don't trade in tiger parts and probably will never encounter a wild tiger. So, realistically, what else can we do to make sure they don't become extinct?

July 2010

What do you think animals feel when they are caught in deadly snares? How can we prevent more tigers and other wildlife from being snared? (See the video or Al Jazeera coverage)

People wants the straight forward information for them to understand what is happening. To them illegal wildlife trade and poaching is not as important but if we can educate them better by telling and showing them the real deal of the situation, people will open their eyes better and do something about it.

I think people are not well educated or given adequate information on the knowledge of poaching and illegal wildlife trade and its consequences, whereas abused animal stories are something that is so vivid and straight forward that people can straight away understand it, and therefore it caught more attention. Secondly, published news or multimedia has not taken enough awareness to the public.

Request goverment to protect the tiger survival in Malaysia And all of us will stop buying tiger related product like medicine etc

People have to see some evidence on poaching & illegal trade before they start to really care. Actually see the killing and the real effect. Abuse stories always create alot of awareness through pictures and videos, something gruesome. Also, when animals are poached/traded, its usually for handbags, fur coats or even making wild animals as pets. When it is used for looks, people usually ignore the cruelty behind it....

people react only to things that are related to themselves. unless the media can direct some sense of belonging for the poaching and illegal wildlife trade issues, the attention will become stagnant and most probably decrease. the exposure of any solved or unsolved animal trading cases should be highlighted clearly without any prejudice.

For people to engage with an issue there must be an emotional side to the story. A movie or a cartoon or game focused on the personal stories around poaching would be a start.

Malaysian government have not taken any steps to bring awareness to public about the hard time these wild animals went through because of the Human unnecessary act towards this poor animals. In China, tigers are being poisoned just because of their body parts and skins. All this because of government of their coutries have not taken any steps to stop this nonsense and bring awareness to their people. :(

the reason is awareness!!!! not much awareness among youth and student. and maybe bcoz people still keeping their mindset that tigers are wild animal and can harm people so, community thought that this animal extinction has nothing to do with human... cruel wasnt it???

from my point of view, the media itself doest cover more on wildlife or simply animals besides.. peoples still not aware of this situation.

people think that the news of poaching are irrelevant or nothing to do with them

maybe coz animal abuse stories are easier to spark emotional reactions and encourages immediate action whereas illegal trade requires far-sightedness and "big picture" perspective, which r notoriously difficult for people in general, which is why illegal trade persists in the first place.
